English: KEMBLE WAS ONE OF THE WEALTHIEST MEN IN MORRIS COUNTY IN THE 1750s AND WELL-ESTABLISHED IN THE POLITICAL ARENA AT THE TIME OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. ALTHOUGH A TORY (AND THE FATHER-IN-LAW TO GENERAL GAGE – COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN NORTH AMERICA) HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON ALLOWED HIM TO RETAIN HIS PROPERTY. DURING THE WAR BOTH GENERAL SMALLWOOD AND GENERAL MAD ANTHONY WAYNE STAYED IN THIS HOUSE IT WAS SOLD IN 1840 AND MOVED SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS UP MT. KEMBLE AVENUE.
THE HOUSE AS SHOWN IS ORIGINAL EXCEPT FOR THE 1/2 STORY ADDITION ON THE RIGHT EXTENSION. THIS PORTION OF SEVERELY DAMAGED DURING HURRICANE SANDY AND THE OWNER GRACIOUSLY SHOWED ME PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE.
