English: THE ACTUAL SITE OF THE FORT IS IN DISPUTE AND THERE ARE NO SIGNS TO INDICATE THE SPOT. HOWEVER VERY CLOSE WAS ERECTED A STATUE OF MAJOR JOHN MASON WHO WITH COLONISTS AND MOHEGAN INDIANS BURNED 600-700 PEQUOT INDIAN MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN TO DEATH IN 1637; THE STATUE HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED TO ANOTHER SITE AND A TREE HAS BEEN PLANTED WHERE IT STOOD. |
