I know of a doc-tor who decided to perform aCa?sarean section on a woman inwhom the head of the child wassticking in the pelvis. As a pre-paratory measure he attempted toempty the bladder, but instead ofdoing that he forced the catheterthrough the urethra into the childshead several times, and when thecatheter was removed its eye wasfound full of brain tissue. Theoperation was abandoned on thisaccount, and in several days adead child was born spontane-ously, with perforations in itshead which were the cause of muchcurious speculation on the part ofthe friends. Prolapse of the Urethral Mucosa.—A more or less complete eversion of themucous membrane of the urethra is found in rare instances. While the restof the urethra remains in its normal position the mucosa becomes loosenedfrom its submucous attachments and is gradually extruded at the external

As the anterior, posterior,and lateral walls of the urethra are all involved, the protruding mass is tubular,and is lined within as well as covered without by a sensitive, easily bleeding-mucous membrane. No age is exemptfrom prolapse of the urethral mucosa, butthe affection is far commoner in youngchildren; in two cases reported the pa-tients had reached the advanced age ofseventy and seventy-two years. The prime cause of the affection isusually struma, but the immediately ex-citing cause may be a blow, straining, orcoughing, or rape. Inflammation of themucosa also occasionally produces a pro-lapse, which is as a rule only partial.
