Illustration depicts oil wells in Baku, Azerbaijan. One oil well spews petroleum with workers and onlookers seen throughout the landscape. The caption reads: "Where it Rains Petroleum. The illustration shows one of the oil wells or 'gushers' at Baku in full swing. The petroleum gushes up like a fountain and then falls into one of the ponds prepared to receive it."

This plate is found within The Romance of Modern Chemistry, which is a layman's introduction to topics in chemistry.
