| Description |
5 October is World Teachers' Day! On this day across the globe, groups celebrate the role of teachers and teachers' organisations, mobilise support for teachers, and ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. As UNESCO notes, World Teachers' Day is a way to show appreciation for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. One organisation that has done just this for over 130 years is the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI). The NZEI was formed in Christchurch in 1883, after a meeting was called to promote the interests of teachers, to take joint action should a teacher be unfairly dealt with, and to promote a higher standard of education. The Institute has been an effective voice for teachers and for education ever since. It comes from the personal papers of ex-Prime Minister Robert Muldoon.
