1338 seal (affixed to a deed dated at Cardiff Castle 9 October 1338 Datum in castro nostro de Kaerdif' nono die mensis Octobris anno regni Regis Edwardi tertii post conquestum duodecimo, regnal date 12 Edward III) of Hugh le Despencer, 2nd Baron le Despencer (1308–1349) (Hugo le Despenser filius et heres domini Hugonis le Despenser et domine Alianore consortis sue, "Hugh le Despenser son and heir of Lord Hugh le Despenser and of his consort Alianor de Clare"), Lord of Glamorgan. His mother Alianor de Clare was the heiress of the lordship of Glamorgan and was suo jure Lord of Glamorgan, which title was inherited by her husband on marriage. Within an ornate cusped octofoil semée of stars, a shield displaying the arms of Despencer: Quarterly 1st & 4th: Argent; 2nd & 3rd: Gules fretty or, over all a ribbon sable. Flanked by two trees and a lion passant guardant in chief. Legend in Latin: S(IGILLUM) HUGONIS LE DESPENSER D(OMI)NI GLAMORGANCIE ET MORGANCIE (for text of charter and description of seal see George Thomas Clark, Cartae et Alia Munimenta Quae ad Dominium de Glamorgancia Pertinent, Vol.4, Cardiff, 1910, Charter no.
