Español: En la mayoría de las Inmaculadas de Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, de las que llegó a pintar unas veinticuatro, la Virgen María aparece vestida con una túnica blanca y un manto de color azul, con sus manos cruzadas sobre el pecho, y al mismo tiempo con una luna creciente a sus pies y con la vista puesta en el Cielo. Esta obra le fue encargada a Murillo por Justino de Neve (1625-1685), que era un canónigo de la catedral de Sevilla, con destino al Hospital de los Venerables de la ciudad de Sevilla, ya que en España se había extendido extraordinariamente desde el siglo XVI la devoción por la Inmaculada Concepción de María, siendo además dicho país el principal defensor del misterio y el que luchó con mayor insistencia hasta que se convirtió en uno de los dogmas de la Fe católica, aunque ello no ocurriría oficialmente hasta el año 1854. A lo largo de su vida, Murillo pintó unas dos docenas de Inmaculadas que en la actualidad se encuentran repartidas por todo el mundo, aunque cuatro de ellas se conservan en el Museo del Prado y otras tantas en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, la ciudad natal del pintor.
