Susan Yvonne Perkins was born April 28, 1954, in Middletown, Ohio, and on September 10, 1977, was crowned Miss America 1978 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She returned to Middletown on October 28, 1977 to an elaborate homecoming celebration, including a big parade. In November, a big celebration was held honoring Miss Perkins at the Middletown City Building. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Perkins of Shawnray Drive. She graduated from Monroe High School. She has been a professional singer, spokesperson, and television reporter. Susan walked in the New York Marathon with the Achilles Club (which serves disabled and senior athletes) as a guide for an 80-year-old former Marine Colonel. Susan had climbed the ladder from "Miss Miami University" to "Miss Ohio" before taking the national crown. Now, as Susan Perkins Botsford, she lives in a Boston and Cape Cod, Massachusetts with her husband, Alan C. Botsford, Jr.; they have two children.
