Description

The Memphis City Seal displays various symbols important to the city's existence and history. The most obvious is the steamboat, symbolizing transportation, trade, and commerce that has long been strong in Memphis and along the Mississippi River. The cotton boll represents the strong ties to cotton trading and its production in the surround Mississippi River Delta. It was the home of the Memphis Cotton Exchange and several of the world's largest cotton corporations are headquartered, or have offices in Memphis. The other symbols represented on the seal are the oak tree, of which the region was originally a vast timber land, and the other is the wheel of progress.
