The temporary Resident Identity Card (PRC) of Ma Cheng. Cropped from original. Final 14 digits of her JMSFZ number mosaiced in Adobe Photoshop CS2 by User:Benlisquare. Grey circle which highlights her name was present in the original image, and is rather difficult to remove. From top to bottom: Name: Ma Cheng; Sex: Female; Ethnicity: Han Chinese; Birthdate; Domicile (removed in original image); Valid dates; Office of issue; JMSFZ number.

Purpose of use

To illustrate the naming controversies regarding Ma Cheng's rare and complex personal name.

Replaceable?

First generation JMSFZs are out of production, and thus it is impossible to obtain a second copy, or a free copy from the existing one. Handwritten temporary cards will be gradually phased out by the PRC.

Note that JMSFZs are the property of the Government of the People's Republic of China, in which works are released under the Public domain. As there are markings made on the image by the New York Times, and as the image was obtained from the NY Times, copyright for the NY Times will be assumed.
