This technology image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
It is recommended to name the SVG file “MMS455b shear ram section.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
Numbers indicate the forces described in the text of the report.
1) Pressure from the well bore resisting the closure of the ram.
2) Low pressure to return the ram to its open position.
3) High pressure to shear (or snap) the drill pipe.
4) Force from sliding wedge that holds the ram in place, even if hydraulic pressure fails after closing.
