These tiny (13 cm.) birds are also called the Long-billed Sunbird or Maroon-breasted Sunbird. These sunbirds are endemic to peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Like other sunbirds, these feed on small insects and build characteristic hanging nests. The species is named after a colonial Dutch governor of Ceylon, Joan Gideon Loten. This is a male as distinguished by the maroon breast band that is clearly seen in this photo. The adult male is mainly glossy purple with a grey-brown belly. The female has yellow-grey upperparts and yellowish underparts.
