Summary
DescriptionLook W down Beulah St to Lakeview Road - Glenville Cleveland Ohio.jpg |
English: Looking east down Beulah Avenue at the intersection of Beulah Avenue and Lakeview Road in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, where a part of the "Glenville shootout" occurred on July 23-24, 1968.
In 1968, single-family homes would have stood on both sides of the street. The sidewalk across Lakeview Road is the "alley" where the gunmen fled. In 1968, single-family homes (subdivided into two or more apartments) occupied the site where the the power substation is now. At the beginning of the gun battle, a civilian tow truck was attempting to pick up an abandoned automobile on Beulah Avenue (just behind where the photographer is standing). About 8:25 PM, four or five gunmen appeared at the intersection depicted, and one gunman shot the tow truck driver in the back. Another gunman, hiding in bushes, rose up and shot him again. The driver ran north on E. 123rd Street, and was shot a third time. An unmarked police arrived, and exchanged gunfire with a group of four gunmen -- who were standing on the north and south sides of the intersection of Beulah Avenue and Lakeview Road (at the stop sign and the other corner to the left of it). Gunman Leroy Mansfield Williams was killed near the stop sign at about 8:30 PM. His body lay on the sidewalk until he was borne away by friends around 9:15 PM, and taken to Huron Road Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival. The police vehicle on Beulah Road fled, and the gunmen fled, too -- crossing Lakeview Road to occupy a home at 1395 Lakeview. They ran down the sidewalk-alley (visible in the background) to get behind the residential homes. Another sidewalk-alley led south, and they fled down it. The Glenville shootout sparked rioting on July 23 which lasted until July 27. More than 2,100 Ohio Army National Guardsmen had to be called in to quell the rioting. |
