Le complexe du temple de Virupaksha vu depuis la colline de Hematuka à Hampi (Vijayanagar)

Le temple de Virupaksha est le plus ancien et le plus important de Hampi. C'est un centre de pèlerinage pour les dévôts de Shiva. Le premier sanctuaire a été créé sur ce site au VIIè siècle.

Le temple est situé sur la rive sud de la rivière Tungabadra, dans la ville sacrée. Le gopuram d'entrée est à droite sur la photo. L'ouverture d'un temple est toujours orientée à l'est. Le gopuram plus petit qui est à gauche sur la photo mène au bassin sacré.

A gauche, les petits temples à toiture pyramidale à degrés sont des temples dédiés à Shiva, ils sont construits dans le style Trikutachala. Ils sont souvent pris par erreur pour des temples jaïns. Ils appartiennent aux temples de la colline de Hemakuta.
