Kairouan est la 4ème ville sainte de l'Islam. Fondée en 670 par Obka Ibn Nafa, lors de la conquête arabe, Kairouan compte une centaine de mosquées et plusieurs dizaines de zaouïas.

La grande mosquée est le plus ancien lieu de prière du Maghreb. Elle date de 670 mais a été reconstruite en 836 sous le règne des Aghlabides. Le minaret (de section carrée, 35 m de haut sur 3 étages) a servi de modèle à de nombreux architectes. La cour sert également de collecteur d'eau.
