Summary

Description

Bought this baby at the Action Camera swap meet for $35. Sweet! And it works!

Update: ran a roll of film through it and shockingly, all images were sharp, properly exposed with no light fog from bad seals. It feels like it was milled from a single piece of steel -- at least it seems to weigh as much. While this is no Leica, the fit and finish is far better than you'd expect from a Soviet product made in a factory called "The Arsenal." The 50mm f/2 Jupiter 8 lens is surprisingly sharp and contrasty. I'm guessing this one was made in 1969, although it's hard to tell for sure. Operation is really too slow (at least for me) to use as a Henri Cartier-Bresson street camera. By today's standards it's large and each exposure requires deliberate thought. I told my daughter I wanted to teach her how to shoot with it. She rolled her eyes and said, "I'm sure that would be a very useful skill if I ever plan to photograph the post-apocaliptic wasteland."
