First appeared in Charles Ellms' The Pirates' Own Book in 1837 in the Edward Low chapter under the title "Low presenting a Pistol and Bowl of Punch." Was later used in Edward Rowe Snow's 1944 book "Pirates and Buccaneers of the Atlantic Coast" in the George Roberts chapter under the title "Russell and Roberts". Occasionally cited as "Pirate Captain John Phillips forcing a prisoner at gunpoint to drink alcohol."
