Summary

Description

A cartoon of a Scottish soldier, signed "JM", whose identity is under dispute.

The provenance is described on the source page thus:

  • (From Google Translate:) "Jessie Murray (1867-1920), British doctor and feminist activist (suffragette), who did part of her studies in France. Original drawing signed JM representing a Scottish soldier. Note from another hand giving the name. Approximately 22* 14cm, traces of glue on the back. The drawing comes from a collection from Madeleine de Gourcy (1897-1951) who was a nurse with the Red Cross during the 14-18 war. It seems to have been part of an amicorum album by Madeleine de Gourcy. Would Jessie Murray have returned to France during the war to help in hospitals? Memories of Jessie Murray seem very rare."
