Summary
DescriptionJ. Isabel Stambaugh, U.S. Distinguished Service Cross winner, c. 1917.jpg |
English: J. Isabel Stambaugh (August 15, 1879 – May 11, 1969) was a United States Army nurse who served on the front lines of battle near the Somme sector in France during World War I. Wounded when the hospital she was working in was shelled by German artillery, she received surgical care on site and at Fort McHenry in the United States. Cited by Field Marshal Douglas Haig for bravery under fire, she was awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Cross in 1919.
Prior to the war, she was the head operating room nurse at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following the war, she returned to her civilian nursing career, serving as the acting supervisor of nurses at Presbyterian Hospital until her retirement from that role circa 1957. This is a cropped, sepia-toned version of her photo that appeared in multiple publications nationwide in 1919. |
