Summary

Description
English: House-shaped sarcophagus from the tomb of Dsang Juin dated between 25 and 220 AD. The tomb is located in Tuogouzui, Leshan, Sichuan, western China. According to the American art historian Wu Hung: "A house-shaped sarcophagus symbolizes some sort of ethnic connection. During the fifth and sixth centuries, house-shaped sarcophagi were not used by the indigenous Chinese who had lived in central and southern China for generations, but were preferred by the Xianbei, Sogdian, and other people of Chinese or non-Chinese ancestry who had immigrated to northern China from the West. Sogdians adopted this kind of house-shaped sarcophagus in their quest for a true 'Chinese' emblem of posthumous immortality, since the house-shaped sarcophagus originated in Sichuan during the Han period (206 BC – 220 AD)." See, for example, the tomb of Wirkak.
