A contemporary model of the 1733 (Proposed) Establishment (Sir Jacob Ackworth), 50-gun 4th Rate two-deck ship-of-the-line HMS Gloucester at the Science Museum, South Kensington, November 2008.
The 1733 Establishment was never officially adopted but ships were built to its standards anyway. Twelve ships of the 50-gun category/group of the 1733 Establishment were launched in 1737-42.
The Gloucester was launched at Sheerness Dockyard in 1737, measured 134ft x 38.5 ft x 16 ft and had a tonnage of 863 tons. She was a rebuild of a 1706 Establishment 50-gun ship of the same name launched in 1711. She was badly damaged in a storm in 1742 and burnt to avoid capture.
The 1733 50-gun ships were armed as follows:
Fo’c’sle: 2x6 pdrs
Quarterdeck: 4x6 pdrs
Upper Gun Deck: 22x9 pdrs
