Description
English: HMS Cavina, a 6,907 GRT, twin-screw banana-carrying refrigerated steamship built by Alexander Stephen & Sons of Govan, Glasgow in 1924 for Elders & Fyffes. The Admiralty requisitioned her on 6 August 1940 and had her converted into an Ocean Boarding Vessel. On 4 August 1941 she found the German ship Frankfurt in the North Atlantic, forcing the latter to be scuttled. This photograph shows Cavina off Greenock on 10 December 1941.
Due to a shortage of refrigerated ships she was returned to merchant service on 9 April 1942. She served with Ministry of War Transport until 1946. Compañia Naviera Lanena bought her in 1957 and renamed her Catusha. She was scrapped in 1958. Photo from original collection of Elders & Fyffes. The company was bought by Irish group FII plc in 1986.
