This parody of the BYU logo juxtaposes a symbol of BYU and its conservative Mormon culture and stances against LGBT rights like same-sex marriage by replacing the homogenous plain white interior fill with the bright and diverse colors of the universally recognized gay pride flag colors. U.S. Code Title 17 Chapter 1 Section 107 gives parodies protection for fair use as a derivative work. According to the US Supreme Court a parody is "the use of some elements of a prior author's composition to create a new one that, at least in part, comments on that author's works", and that commentary function provides some justification for use of the older work (see Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc.). See also the w:derivative work page.
