The first named place in the islands of Bermuda.
On Friday, 28th July 1609, Sir Thomas Gates, Governor designate of
the Colony of Virginia and a passenger on the "SEA VENTURE", led
the first group of survivors from the wrecked vessel to shore.
Leaping ashore as the ship's boat grounded, Sir Thomas declared,
"THIS IS GATES, HIS BAY".
All 150 people onboard the "Sea Venture", including Admiral Sir
George Somers, followed Sir Thomas ashore at this spot.
