Summary

Description
English: Gargoyle - Church of St Nicholas The word gargoyle is from the French "gargouille" meaning throat. Gargoyles were designed to direct water away from the walls and foundations of a church and first appeared in church architecture in the early 13th century. This one has lost his plumbing - a lead pipe through his mouth in which to convey the water to its release.
