I found the photo on RoadsidePeek.com, which asserts a copyright to the photo. Fair use is asserted because:
- The photo is of a sign comprising the store's logo. The logo copyright, and the copyright in the other design elements of the sign, belongs to the nonprofit Fedco store chain and not to the taker of the photo. The photo's content, I assert, does not contain any copyrightable content other than the copyrighted design of the sign and the copyrighted logo.
- Logos are considered to be fair use on Wikipedia.
- Therefore, the use of this photo is a fair use under US law.
- This may be beside the point, but the store chain is defunct and it's no longer possible to take a photo of the store signs.
