Summary
[edit]Description |
Follicular Dendritic Cells (FDCs) are located in follicles of secondary lymphoid tissues (e.g., lymph nodes, spleen, Peyer's patches, and tonsils). They are functional in the promotion of the humoral immune response. Adjacent FDCs dendrites interdigitate and form a network of reticulum. Typically FDC dendrites trap antigen-antibody complexes on their surfaces via Fc and complement receptors. The FDCs present these immune complexes to B memory cells and thus initiate the humoral immune response. A scanning electron micrograph shows the structure of an FDC isolated from a mouse lymph node and cultured for about 30 days before fixed and prepared for scanning EM. For further information on the in vivo and in vitro morphology and functions of FDCs go to the "FDC Network" http://home.comcast.net/~aszakal/ . |
