Summary

Description
English: A World War II (WWII) era Vought F4U Corsair is staged on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Feb. 16, 2023. The Corsair landed following a flyover of the funeral for retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. John H. Tashjian, who flew the pictured aircraft during WWII. Tashjian, of Fresno, California, enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 9, 1941, just two days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 1943, he transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps to be a fighter pilot, serving two tours during WWII in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. The American fighter-bomber aircraft primarily served during WWII and the Korean War. The aircraft entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1944, with the primary mission to destroy enemy aircraft and was armed with bomb and rocket ordnance. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt.
