  1. w czasie wojny secesyjnej oficer mógł mieć jednocześnie kilka stopni: jeden w armii stałej, inny (zwykle wyższy) w formowanych wtedy jednostkach ochotniczych. Poza tym istniały jeszcze stopnie tymczasowe - w skrajnym przypadku dany oficer mógł mieć cztery stopnie: być np. porucznikiem armii stałej, tymczasowym kapitanem armii stałej, majorem ochotników i tymczasowym pułkownikiem ochotników.
