Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Elizabeth, Lady Rich. Black and coloured chalks, pen and Indian ink, metalpoint, on pink-primed paper, 37.9 × 30.3cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.

The drawing has suffered from rubbing, and the penwork by another hand, according to the art historian K. T. Parker in his study of the Windsor drawings, is "rather coarse and fumbling". Holbein's left-handed shading can be seen in the headdress on the left. Two paintings based on this sketch by followers of Holbein survive, including one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Elizabeth, Lady Rich (d. 1558), was the daughter of William Jenks, or Gynkes, a London grocer. She married Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich, now notorious for his evidence against both Sir Thomas More and Sir Thomas Cromwell before their executions in 1535 and 1540. She bore Rich, whose portrait Holbein also drew, five sons and ten daughters. References
