Notes

Two versions exist, neither by Holbein himself, the other in a German private collection.

Elizabeth, Lady Rich (d. 1558), was the daughter of William Jenks, or Gynkes, a London grocer. She married Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich, now notorious for his evidence against both Sir Thomas More and Sir Thomas Cromwell before their executions in 1535 and 1540. She bore Rich, whose portrait Holbein also drew, five sons and ten daughters.
