English: Photophores of the lanternfish of an Electrona risso lanternfish, caught aboard the RV Celtic Explorer, illuminated by camera flash. While the blue colouration is natural, it should be noted that in this image we are not seeing the light-organs bioluminescing; rather, the camera flash is reflected off a blue reflective layer that underlies the photogenic cells. |
