English: The electrocytes of most kinds of electric fish evolved from an existing excitable tissue, skeletal muscle. Nerves and muscles make use of action potentials, small voltages created by moving sodium and potassium ions across the cell membrane, for nerve signalling and to trigger muscle contraction. Electrocytes use the same mechanism purely to create a voltage.
