Object history
English: The demi-lion is a modification of the arms of Hesse. The origin of the glasses is not known. They first appear in seals from the 16th century and are used ever afterwards in images, seals and boundary stones. Otto Hupp has suggested that the glasses are derived from the arms of the Archbishopric of Mainz, as the area was part of Mainz. But that's not for sure. The lion as a symbol for Hesse appeared first in 1722.
