English: THE CLARKE ESTATE WAS BUILT AS THE HOME OF CHAUNCEY AND MARIE RANKIN CLARKE IN 1919. CLARKE WAS BORN IN 1858 IN PEORIA, ILLINOIS, WHERE HIS FAMILY MADE A FORTUNE BY DEVELOPING THE CLARKE DISTILLERIES. IN THE 1890'S, CHAUNCEY MOVED TO PHOENIX, ARIZONA, FOR HIS HEALTH THEY MOVED TO CALIFORNIA IN 1904, SHORTLY AFTER BUILDING THIS HOME OIL WAS DISCOVERED AND THE SMELL AND NOISE FORCED THE,TO LEAVE. THE SITE IS NOW OWNED BY SANTA FE SPRINGS AND USED AS A WEDDING VENUE |
