Description
English: Boathooks and paddles made and used by Yu'pik and Inupiaq hunters on the Alaska coast, late 1800s. Boathooks: 1, Norton Sound, style used on Umiaks; 2, Lower Yukon ; 3 Golofnin Bay; 4, Lower Kuskoquim; 5, Sledge Island. Paddles: 6, Big Lake; 7, 8 Kushunuk; 9, King Island; 10, specialized paddle used for quiet approach when hunting seal or walrus, also to slap the water to cause the injured animal to dive, Cape Denbiegh. Nelson provides further description and illustrates other examples. Note that despite the single blades these are kayak paddles.
