Summary
[edit]Description |
Screenshot (uncropped, fuller image) of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson singing "Is You or Is You Ain't" in the 1932 film Harlem Is Heaven. Accompanying Robinson in a "speak set" of this song is bandleader and jazz pianist Putney Dandridge. In some current references and also in film reviews from 1932 (such as in the entertainment trade publication Variety), Dandridge is misidentified as Eubie Blake even though Robinson in this scene clearly addresses "Putney" before they begin their performance. |

- Other information
This screenshot was captured from a YouTube presentation of the film by Wikipedia contributor Strudjum on February 9, 2018. See External links on Harlem Is Heaven page for viewing YouTube copy. It should be noted that the surviving available copies of Harlem Is Heaven are rather poor in their visual quality. The lack of the overall clarity of screenshots from the film, abrupt scene cuts, and the film's choppy frame rates are due less to degradation over time than to the low-budget cinematography and rapid production and editing schedules of the original film. As noted too in the related article, the complete budget for the film was "less than $50,000" (likely far less), and the production's entire filming on sets and on location was done in only one week.
