Available energy flux vs. energy consumption. 89,000 TW is the amount of sunlight that falls on the Earth's surface, 370 TW is all the energy in the wind, and 15 TW was the global rate of energy consumption in 2004. The volume of each cube corresponds to the size of the flux.

Data sources:

  • Solar: Sustainable Energy 2005 The MIT Press by Jefferson W. Tester et al
  • Wind (includes wind and wave - wind creates waves): Wes Hermann, Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford University[1]
  • Global energy consumption: Energy Information Administration (in 2004, 447.605 Quadrillion btu/yr = 14.965 x 10^12 Watts)[2]
