Description

Colourised postcard of Australian troops loading a 9.45 inch trench mortar ("Flying Pig") near Pozières, France, August 1916. Text on back of postcard read "Tommy's nickname for a trench-mortar is 'flying pig' and this picture shows some of our men loading one of these useful weapons".

Comment : The absence of a fuze on the bomb and lack of concealment indicates this is a training or publicity photograph away from the front line.
