JPEG file comment	CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 75 -------------------------- Notes: De goede en de slechte moordenaar zijn vastgebonden op twee afgeknotte bomen. De lichamen zijn erg realistisch weergegeven. Op de grond treuren Maria en Johannes, de lievelingsapostel van Christus. De schedel verwijst naar Adam. Sinds de tiende eeuw geloofde men immers dat die op Golgotha begraven was. De zondeval wordt door het offer van Christus tenietgedaan. Op Golgotha komen de oorsprong van de erfzonde en de overwinning ervan samen. Het werk bevat vele symbolen betreffende de dood en verlossing. Zo verwijst de uil naar de joden en de zondaars die zich van het ware geloof afwenden. De nachtvogel wendt zich ook af van het daglicht. De slangen die door de schedel kronkelen, staan symbool voor de dood en de duivel. Achter het kruis ontspringt een nieuwe twijg aan een oude stronk. Dit verbeeldt de relatie tussen het Oude Verbond en het Nieuwe Verbond. Het werk is geschilderd in de olieverftechniek, wat erop wijst dat de Siciliaanse kunstenaar beïnvloed werd door de Vlaamse Primitieven. --------------------------- Template:Provenance Verzameling Jan Vanveerle, Antwerpen, voor 1648; verzameling douairi�re de Maelcamp de Balsberge, Gent (verworven in Itali�); gekocht op een veiling door dr.
