Diphilus (Ai<piAoi), one of the principal Athe-nian comic poets of the New Comedy and a con-temporary of Menander and Philemon, was anative of Sinope. He is said to have exhibited100 plays. Though, in point of time, Diphilusbelonged to the New Comedy, his poetry seemsto have had more of the character of the Middle.This is shown, among other indications, by thefrequency with which he chose mythological 1subjects for his plays, and by his bringingon the stage the poets Archilochus, Hipponax,and Sappho.
