To remedy these conditions Van Buren recom-mended that the government should create an independentTreasury to take care of its own funds, and that it shouldcollect its own revenue and make its own disbursements.A bill was introduced into the Senate on September 14, 1837,which after being considerably amended became law onJuly 4, 1840.
