Deutsch: Magisches Quadrat: Sator - der Sämann; tenet = hält; Opera = die Werke, Rotas = Flexionsform von rota, das Rad, vielleicht auch von rotare = kreisförmig umherdrehen; Arepo, gibt es nicht im Lateinischen, vielleicht von Arepennis, einem gallischen Wort, aus dem das spätere "arpent" entstand, in der Bedeutung eines Ackers von der Größe eines halben Morgens. Es gibt verschiedene Auslegungen: Albertus Magnus empfiehlt, die Worte Sator Arepo etc. auf Streifen zu schreiben und den kranken Haustieren gegen Hexerei und Teufelswerk zu füttern. Gegen Brandgefahr wird empfohlen, Ator Arepo etc. auf jede Seite eines Zinntellers zu schreiben, den Teller in die Flammen zu werfen, sogleich wird das Feuer erlöschen. Einige Deutungen verweisen auf eine magische Gebetsformel: Ordnet man die 25 Buchstaben nach der Methode symmetrischer Rösselsprung-Zickzacklinien ergibt sich "Oreo te pater, - oro te pater, - sanas!", zu deutsch "Ich bitte dich, Vater, ich bitte dich, Veter, du heilst" - für mich die wohl am ehesten zutreffende magische Antwort auf eine magische Frage |
