As under the new financial arrange-ments each first-class county participates pro-portionately in the profits derived from thetest matches, any possibility of difficulty insecuring the service of professional cricketerson the ground that they are engaged elsewhereis removed. During 1898 three batsmen achieved the dis-tinction of scoring over a thousand runs andcapturing over a hundred wickets in a season offirst-class cricket—F. S. Jackson for Yorkshire,Charles Townsend for Gloucestershire, and W.Cuttell for Lancashire. This had up to this yearbeen done eighteen times since 1874—seven timesby myself, twice each by C. T.
