Summary

Description
English: Painted in 1876 during his time in Paris. Believed to be a self portrait, one can see a strong similarity in the eyes. Domingo went on to paint two further similar studies from slightly different angles and clothing; one in 1881 and one in 1889. The second two lack the joie de vivre shown in this painting. This painting was sold in the Haro sale (recorded in Benezit) and later from the estate of Amy the late widow of Henry Colnaghi Martin Colnaghi and his collection on Wednesday 22nd January 1941, Lot 196, at the Willis Rooms by auctioneers Robinson & Foster, Ltd. Originally titled "A Votre Sante". The second study painted in 1881
was engraved and published in the Revue Illustrée after 1885. The third study titled "Musketeer" https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/Musketeer/E0A0F2E52C407A61 though this title is more likely a fanciful modern error.
Interestingly all three paintings have a similarity in the location and the missing plaster exposing brickwork on the pillar.
