Introduction
[edit]White Star Watch is a Swiss luxury wristwatch manufacturer headquartered in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a region renowned for its long-standing watchmaking tradition. Established in 1895,.[1] White Star became known for its innovative designs and advancements in horology. [2]
Under the leadership of its founder, Henri Weiss, the brand gained prominence through its horological patents, international reach, and bold yet elegant timepieces. Facing challenges during the quartz crisis in the late 20th century, the Weiss family chose to uphold their traditional values by rejecting quartz and electronic movements, instead scaling down operations.
History
White Star Watch was established in 1895 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, often referred to as the international capital of Swiss watchmaking.[3] The city, known for its watchmaking heritage since the 17th century, offered an ideal environment for Henri Weiss to grow his business.[4] Leveraging emerging global communication channels, White Star rapidly expanded its presence to international markets.[5]
In 1927, following the unexpected passing of Henri Weiss, the company was taken over by his son, Henri Jr. Weiss [6], who continued the legacy of innovation and growth. By 1942, the third generation, led by Philippe-Joseph Weiss,[7] introduced key innovations and maintained the brand’s reputation until the 1980s [8] Philippe-Joseph is particularly noted for the creation of the brand's flagship model, the Diagrafic watch.
Technological Advancements and Innovations
[edit]White Star Watch contributed significantly to technological advancements in the watchmaking industry.[9] In 1938, the company developed a chronograph featuring a rotating graduated disc beneath the dial, allowing users to read additional data directly from the watch face.[10]
Renewal of the Brand
[edit]In 2023, White Star Watch announced plans to reintroduce several of its models, with releases scheduled for late 2024.[11]
