Vanessa Monroe, also known as Vanessa Xtravaganza-Continental, is an American drag performer, photographer, and transgender activist.
Early Life and Career
[edit]Monroe began her performance career at 17 in New York City during the 1980s and 1990s, appearing at venues such as the Monster Bar and Escuelita Night Club. She was affiliated with the House of Xtravaganza[1], a prominent house in the ballroom scene. In the early 1990s, she won several beauty pageants in New York City.
On August 17, 2024, Monroe performed at Pridelines' annual gala[2], "Queerferno: A Disco Masquerade," held at the Coral Gables Golf and Country Club. The event celebrated Pridelines' 42 years of service to the LGBTQ+ community and featured performances by Lady Bunny and Lucky Starzzz from RuPaul's Drag Race, season 17.
Relocation to Miami and Activism
[edit]By the mid-1990s, Monroe relocated to Miami, Florida. In 2013, she became active as a transgender activist and photographer, participating in events like TransArt in 2017 and 2018. She was crowned Miss Florida Roundup in 2019, a conference for LGBTQ individuals and their supporters involved in 12-step recovery programs. Following this title, Monroe engaged in community fundraisers and performed at Miami Beach Pride as Queen Borinquen Clinic.
