Sioto Jazz is a Macedonian rock band from Bitola, formed in 2022.[1]. The band's name is a play on the Macedonian phrase "Сиот Тој Џез" (Siot Toj Dzhez), which translates to All That Jazz.
The band consists of Anastasija Trajkovska (vocals), Eva Todorovska (vocals, backing vocals, guitar), Martin Petkovski (guitar, piano, vocals), Ilija Volcheski (saxophone), Gorazd Hristovski (bass), Blagojche Aceski (drums) and Martina Stevanoska (backing vocals). During live performances, the band is sometimes joined by Viktor Stojcheski on percussive instruments.
Sioto Jazz have released one studio album called The True State of All Things in 2023. The recording sessions of their first album were done by Martin Petkovski, Anastasija Trajkovska, Eva Todorovska and Ilija Volcheski. They were later joined by Blagojche Aceski, Gorazd Hristovski and Martina Stevanoska, to perform the songs live [2].
Sioto Jazz's style draws influences from various genres such as pop, alternative rock, punk rock, indie rock, jazz. They've cited a lot of various artists from differing styles as their influences, including Herbie Hancock, Nick Cave, The Smashing Pumpkins, The National, Men I Trust, Grimes and Spasen Siljanoski[3]. They use a blend of fuzzy distortion with jazz rhythms, and combine between deep, male vocals with mellow female vocals to create a specific juxtaposition in the interpretations.
History

[edit]The band was founded in late November 2022 by Martin Petkovski and Viktor Stojcheski. They started by fiddling with versions of songs by Martin's old band Ma3Ho, aMa He e, which then evolved into Sioto Jazz[4]. Anastasija and Eva joined the band in early December 2022, by which time the practice space moved from Martin's home studio to an old factory facility in the industrial part of Bitola. The band started off as a four-piece with Anastasija singing the vocal parts, Martin on guitar, Eva on bass and Viktor on drums. They have performed twice in their hometown in this lineup, both times in the club Vakyym.
The True State of All Things
[edit]Sioto Jazz's first album was released on 29 September 2023. It was recorded in the time period between March and August 2023 and it was published online by Kamai Audio.[5]. The album was recorded mostly by Martin Petkovski in his home studio in Bitola called Caymene Studios (a play on the macedonian language phrase "Кај мене" which translates to "At my place"), with Anastasija Trajkovska and Eva Todorovska singing the vocal parts. Ilija Volcheski played the saxophone on the album, which was recorded in Melivora Studio in Nizhe Pole, Bitola. Some of the guitar parts were also recorded in their practice room called Kamai Sobata Dolu (the Kamai room downstairs). Additional instruments were recorded by various artists worldwide, including Santiago Vasquez (classical guitar) from Colombia and Målfrid Wigdahl (double bass) from Norway. [5]
Martin Petkovski used a heavily-modified Squier Affinity Strat and an Epiphone Dot Studio guitar through various Fender Amps to record the guitar parts. He uses a Big Muff fuzz pedal, DigiTech Digidelay delay pedal, DOD Gunslinger overdrive pedal and a Digitech Whammy 5 DT pitch shifting pedal. The bass parts were recorded by both Martin Petkovski and Armin Amedovski on a Squier Jazz Bass guitar. Santiago Vasquez and Målfrid Wigdahl used their own instruments in their own studios to record their parts. All other instruments were recorded with MIDI input by Martin Petkovski[6].
Throughout its twelve tracks, The True State of All Things is a concept album exploring themes of the extinction of small towns and cities, personal identity, isolation, sorrow, and long-distance romance [3]. The title of the album is a reference to the album Microphones in 2020 by The Microphones which starts off with that exact verse. The album is inspired by Martin Petkovski's personal experiences while living in a town that's shrinking with each passing year, continuously losing friends and lovers to physical distance between them, which is reflected in the song's lyrics[7].
Live Appearances

Sioto Jazz appeared on several shows and festivals throughout 2024, most notably on the Xotel live session which was published in early March 2024[8]. They also played along with other Macedonian acts such as Foltin on the promotion of their new album[9], Pumpers on their solo concert in 2024, Beach Film Festival in Ohrid, various festivals in Skopje and on the Pin Music Conference[10][11]
