Moluccans in Papua New Guinea[1]

The Moluccans, primarily Ambonese, from eastern Indonesia, were recruited by German colonists in the late 19th century to fill clerical and supervisory roles in German New Guinea's economy. Settling in areas like Rabaul Town of East New Britain province, their population peaked in the early 20th century. Identified as "Malays," they maintained cultural ties through language, surnames, and traditions.

As Papua New Guinea approached independence, many sought Australian citizenship but retained connections to their heritage. The community is close-knit, with many members contributing to local business and maintaining cultural practices. Today many reside in Australia while some of their mixed-race descendants still live in Papua New Guinea.
