Kabochi Gitau (born November 27, 1993), professionally known as Kabeaushé, is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, performer, and record producer. He began his career with Uganda's Hakuna Kulala label and later collaborated with Berlin-based Monkeytown Records.[1]

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Kabochi Gitau was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, in a Christian household. His musical influences include gospel music, rock music, soul, ragga, and early 2000s radio hits. Before pursuing a full-time music career, Kabochi was involved in acting and media. He appeared in projects such as MTV Shuga and participated in the MTV Rising Star mentorship program under Lupita Nyong'o. He also worked in radio, gaining experience in various creative fields.[2]

Career

The Coming of Gaze (2023)

Kabochi's debut album, The Coming of Gaze, was released in 2023 through Uganda's Hakuna Kulala label. The album included tracks from his Absorbed Wednesdays SoundCloud series, where he released music weekly.[3] Curated by Derek Debru and Arlen Dilsizian of Nyege Nyege it incorporates elements of pop music and experimental production.

Hold On to Deer Life, There's a Black Boy Behind You! (2023)

In 2023, Kabochi released his second album, Hold On to Deer Life, There's a Black Boy Behind You!, through Berlin-based Monkeytown Records.[4] The album featured a blend of electronic and rave-inspired sounds. Tracks such as Go with Gut and These Dishes Ain't Gonna Do Themselves were notable, with the latter included in the UK television series Queenie[5]and the EA Sports FIFA 2024 soundtrack.[6][7]

The album received coverage from platforms including Bandcamp Daily,[8] Loud and Quiet,[9] Songlines Magazine,[10] and Pan African Music[11][12] and appeared on several year-end album lists. Kabochi's music has also been highlighted on platforms such as BBC Radio 6 and DJ Mag.[13]

Live Performances

Kabochi has performed at festivals across Europe. Notable appearances include the Roskilde Festival in Denmark,[14] Rencontres Trans Musicales[15] and We Love Green in France,[16] Sónar in Spain,[17] Reeperbahn Festival[18] and Fusion Festival in Germany,[19] Kappa FuturFestival in Italy[20],and Bad Bonn Kilbi in Switzerland.[21] In 2024, he performed at over 40 European festivals.

Recognition and Awards

In 2024, Kabochi received the Polyton Award[22][23] for Best Composition and the VIA VUT Indie Award[24][25][26] for Best Album.
